Ankara. Turkey’s ongoing special operation against Kurdish fighters in Syria has reached near the US Army camp in Northeast Syria. Due to Turkey coming so close to the American camp, the tension in the region has reached its peak. US Central Command, which oversees about 900 US troops in Syria to combat the Islamic State terror group, acknowledged the attack for the first time on Tuesday and said no US personnel were at the base at the time. According to the American news channel VOA, at the time of the Turkish strike, American soldiers were just 300 meters away from their base.
US soldiers survive Turkish airstrikes
A source close to the leadership of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, further told VOA that US troops were at the base only five days ago and were conducting some aerial surveillance of the area. Also, SDF officials said Tuesday’s airstrike killed two US-trained members of its anti-terrorist forces. Officials say these actions jeopardize shared goals, including the continued fight against ISIS to ensure the group does not re-emerge in the region.
America appeals for peace
Responding on Tuesday, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that the US is urging all sides to reduce tensions in their talks. He said that America has publicly stated that these attacks from all sides put their mission at risk.
