The major reason for this increase is attributed to the variant of Omicron XBB.1.5, which is rapidly infecting people.
More than 40% of COVID-19 cases in the United States are now reported to be linked to the highly infectious Omicron XBB.1.5. Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed on Friday that the sub-variant has doubled over the past week. Dr. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Minnesota, said in a recent interview with Reuters that the worst variant the world is facing right now is actually XBB.
Osterholm said that in 10 US states, where there has been a boom in the cases of Corona. There has been an increase in XBB cases. For comparison, XBB.1.5 accounted for 44.1% of total cases in the country for the week ending 31 December, up from 21.7% the week before. The XBB variant is increasing the cases of corona in some parts of Asia including Singapore. The US agency started reporting separate data for the two sub-variants this week.
