INS Mormugao: Indigenously built missile destroyer ‘INS Mormugao’ was inducted into the Indian Navy on Sunday to boost its maritime capability amid China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean region. India is boosting its maritime capability with a focus on the Indian Ocean in the backdrop of concerns over China’s growing adventurism in the region.
1- According to the Indian Navy, this warship is equipped with remote sensing equipment, modern radar, and weapon systems like surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles.
2- The length of this warship is 163 meters, its width is 17 meters and its weight is 7,400 tonnes. It can be counted among the deadliest warships built by India.
3- Mormugao is named after the historic Goa port city on the west coast. Incidentally, this vessel was first put to sea on December 19, 2021, the day Goa completed 60 years of liberation from Portuguese rule.
4- Mormugao is the second of the four destroyers of the ‘Visakhapatnam class. It has been designed by the indigenous organization of the Indian Navy and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.
5- The vessel is propelled by four powerful gas turbines. The vessel is capable of attaining a speed of over 30 knots.
6- The anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the ship have been indigenously developed and the ship is fitted with rocket launchers, torpedo launchers, and SAW helicopters.
