Beijing. Some universities in China have said that they will allow students to complete the semester studying from home in view of the possibility of an outbreak of Covid-19 during the New Year holidays in January. It is not yet clear how many schools and colleges will do this, but universities in Shanghai and surrounding cities said students would be given the option of either returning home early or staying on campus and getting tested every 48 hours. There were 7,451 new cases of coronavirus infection in China on Monday and so far 5,235 people have died.
This time the Lunar New Year is coming on 22 January which is traditionally celebrated on a large scale in China. Several lockdowns have been imposed in the universities in the last three years, due to which students confined to the campus or rooms have occasionally clashed with the authorities. Restaurants are mostly closed or empty, as many businesses are having difficulty finding employees who haven’t been infected. Sanlitun, a congested area of Beijing, is also deserted, despite the removal of barriers to prevent the spread of Kovid-19.
Announcement of exemption in zero covid policy, patients with mild symptoms will be able to stay at home
The universities’ announcement comes as China relaxed its strict “zero covid” policy, allowing people with mild symptoms to stay at home instead of being sent to isolation centers. Along with this, he has also made many more changes in the policy after widespread demonstrations. Last month, Beijing and several other cities saw demonstrations against the tough restrictions, demanding President Xi Jinping step down. Such demonstrations in China had never happened before in recent decades. With the relaxation of the lockdown, the possibility of spreading a new wave of infection is also increasing, which will increase the burden of the already overburdened health service in some places.
