It may sound strange and it may be difficult to believe, but the first match of the Ranji Trophy could last only for 1 day. This match was played on 4 November 1934 in Chennai. The Madras (renamed Tamil Nadu after 1970-71) team won it by an innings and 23 runs. Batting first, the team of Mysore (renamed Karnataka after 1873) was reduced to just 48 runs in 27.2 overs. AJ Ram Singh took 6 wickets for 19 runs in 13.2 overs.
In response, the Madras team got all out on a score of 130 runs in just 43 overs. Mysore Vijayasarathy bowled 8 overs and took 6 wickets for 23 runs. In the second innings, when the Mysore team came out to bat, this time it was bundled out for only 59 runs. This time again Ram Singh made 5 batters his victim. On the basis of excellent bowling performance, Madras i.e. Tamil Nadu team won the match by an innings and 23 runs in just 1 day.
