London. Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has defended Britain’s record on racism amid a columnist’s controversial remarks about Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle. Sunak was answering questions asked by journalists during his visit to Riga, the capital of Latvia on Monday. He rejected the charge of racism and underlined his legacy. Sunak told reporters, ‘I absolutely do not believe that Britain is a racist country. I hope that whatever I say as the first British Asian Prime Minister of our country will be given importance.
“You know, I’m really proud of my country, its culture, its hospitality, its beauty,” said Sunak, who was born in Britain and hails from Punjab, recently featured in the “Harry and Megan” documentary that aired on Netflix. In the background, former television presenter and columnist Jeremy Clarkson wrote an article on ‘The duchess of Sussex’ Megan Markle in the newspaper ‘The Sun’, after which the controversy of racism started. Markle is African-American. The Independent Press Standards Organization (IPSO) received more than 6,000 complaints regarding Clarkson’s column, resulting in the author and the newspaper apologizing and removing the column from its website.
