Tellez, 42, who made the video, was traveling with his wife and children, ages 7, 4, and 1, after spending Christmas with family. He told Reuters that he had reached the airport for an 8:24 a.m. flight despite the overnight firing. Tellez said that upon hearing that gang members were at the airport, Tellez hid in the bathroom with his family. However, the rumor turned out to be false and the Aero Mexico passengers quickly boarded their planes.
Meanwhile, he started making videos from his phone. He told that he was recording from the plane two large transport aircraft of the Air Force, small, fighter-like attack aircraft, and military trucks. Then the sound of gunfire started echoing from a distance. A video circulating on social media shows the same incident, with passengers crouching down in their seats as a baby cries.
A flight attendant told that there was a collision in the engine, due to which the leak started. The crew instructed the passengers to disembark, taking them to a windowless waiting room in the airport. It is not clear who was firing at whom.
