Shubman Gill has become the youngest player to score a double century in men’s ODIs. During this, he left behind fellow player Ishan Kishan, who made a record against Bangladesh last month by scoring 210 runs at the age of 24 years and 145 days. Shubman Gill played an inning of 208 runs in 149 balls with the help of 19 fours and 9 sixes. India scored 349 runs for 8 wickets. In response, the Kiwi team scored 337 runs on the basis of Michael Bracewell’s 140 runs. India won this match by 12 runs. Gill was adjudged Player of the Match for his brilliant innings. Right-handed batter Gill said that I was eagerly waiting to get on the field and do what I wanted to do.
‘I wanted to play freely’
Gill said about his strategy, ‘With the fall of wickets, there were times when I wanted to play freely and I am glad I could do it in the end. Sometimes when the bowler is on top, you need to make him feel the pressure. I needed to avoid the dot balls, show some intent and work hard in the gaps which I was doing. I wasn’t really thinking of 200, but once I hit sixes in the 47th over, I knew I could do it. Earlier, I was playing by looking at the ball.
