  • There is a tussle between the government and the court regarding the powers

Jerusalem. Israel’s Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that Aryeh Deri, a key member of the country’s new government, cannot serve as a cabinet minister. According to the news agency AP, this decision deepened the disputes regarding the power of the courts in Israel and it could also create a crisis in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The court said that the head of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, Aryeh Deri, is disqualified as a minister after being convicted in a case of ‘tax crimes’. Although Derry had said not to leave the post. Netanyahu must now decide whether to comply with the court’s decision to expel his close ally Deri from the cabinet or to defy it, further escalating the dispute with the judicial system.

The court said in a statement that a majority of the judges on the panel decided that the appointment was highly improper and that the prime minister should therefore remove Derry from office. This decision has come at a time when a comprehensive change in the country’s legal system is being considered. One such proposal includes doing away with the “reasonableness” test when reviewing government decisions by courts. In this controversy, the opposition says that various changes will give too much power to the hands of the government and weaken the Supreme Court. And the government says it will correct a power imbalance between the executive and judicial branches.
