Alaska Polar Bear Attack: In Wells, Alaska, Polar Bear attacked a woman and her innocent boy and killed them. A woman and her one-year-old boy were killed by a polar bear while chasing a community living in a remote, small area in Alaska, the military said on Tuesday. The local administration has identified both the dead. The Alaska State Troopers Dispatch report said the bear followed residents after entering the western Alaskan town of Wells before attacking the woman and her boy.
According to reports, after the incident, the bear was shot dead by another resident. Austin McDaniel, director of communications for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, said in a statement on Wednesday that the victims were identified as 24-year-old Summer Mayomik and her 1-year-old son, Clyde Ongtowasruk.
Troopers and Alaska Department of Fish and Game personnel are planning to go to Wells after the attack, but bad weather is making it difficult to go now. McDaniel, director of communications for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, said on Wednesday that bad weather in the area and a lack of runway lights in Wells were making it difficult for security forces and Alaska Department of Fish and Game personnel to get to Wells. Soldiers are not able to fly due to bad weather. McDaniel said the troops would still try to fly to Wales today.
What the report says about polar bear attacks
According to a 2017 study published by The Wildlife Society, polar bear attacks on humans are very rare. It was told in the report that between 1870 and 2014, information about 73 attacks by polar bears was collected. These attacks took place in 5 such countries which come in the polar bear range. Those 5 countries are Canada, Greenland, Norway, Russia, and the United States of America. The attacks resulted in 20 deaths and 63 injuries. There are very few cases of polar bears attacking humans. But the melting of ice due to climate change has changed the behavior of bears and now human encounters with them have become more likely.
Attack on polar bears is very rare
It is noteworthy that the attack of polar bears on humans is very rare. According to a Reuters report, before this, the last attack on polar bears took place in 2013. Residents of Churchill in northern Manitoba, Canada, known as the polar bear capital, reported that bear encounters are becoming more common. Thousands of tourists visit each waterfall in the hope of catching a glimpse of the bear.
