New Delhi/Washington. India’s private airline Air India, owned by the Tata Group, will buy 220 aircraft from Boeing in a $34 billion deal. It will also have the option to buy 70 more aircraft, taking the total value of the deal to $45.9 billion.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden termed the deal between Air India and Boeing as historic and described it as an excellent example of mutually beneficial cooperation. Giving this information, a PMO official said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday evening. During this, Prime Minister Modi expressed satisfaction over the deepening of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
While announcing the Boeing-Air India deal on Tuesday, US President Biden said that together with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he is looking forward to further strengthening the relationship between India and America.
Details of the deal
According to the announcement made by the ‘White House’ regarding this deal, Boeing and Air India have reached an agreement, under which the airline will buy a total of 220 aircraft. These include 190 B737 Max, 20 B787, and 10 B777X aircraft. This deal is worth 34 billion dollars. The deal includes an option to buy an additional 50 Boeing 737 Max and 20 Boeing 787 aircraft. In this way, the deal for a total of 290 aircraft will cost $45.9 billion.
Joe Biden said, ‘I am proud to announce the deal of more than 200 US-manufactured aircraft through the historic agreement between Air India and Boeing today.’ Air India’s order is Boeing’s third largest ever in dollar value and second largest in terms of the number of aircraft.
Biden said that this purchase would create one million job opportunities for Americans in 44 states. Many of these jobs will not require a college degree. He said that this announcement shows the strength of the US-India economic partnership. He said, ‘With Prime Minister Modi, I hope to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries. We will continue to face common global challenges so that the future of our citizens can be more prosperous.
The announcement of the deal comes after the US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) launched last month. The initiative aims to expand strategic technology partnerships and defense industrial cooperation between the governments, businesses, and universities of the two countries. Biden and Modi announced ICET in May 2022.
