Anil Sharma’s film ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ was a story based on true love. At the same time, Ashutosh Gowariker’s film ‘Lagaan’ was a sports drama. both ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Gadar’ were the best films at their own level but in one case ‘Lagaan’ lagged behind the Sunny film ‘Gadar’ and that was the collection. The subjects of both the films were very good but ‘Gadar’ overshadowed ‘Lagaan’ as a total entertainment. After ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ in the year 1994, this film by Anil Sharma made the record of the highest-grossing film. According to the figures, the total collection of ‘Lagaan’ where estimated at 65.97 crores. At the same time, the collection of ‘Gadar’ was 133 crores, and it proved to be the blockbuster movie of that year.

Aamir Khan’s film proved lucky in terms of awards. The film received awards in eight categories at the 49th National Film Awards. Apart from this, it was also nominated for the Academy Award in the category of ‘Best Foreign Language Film’.
