Scientists preparing to reduce sunlight and heat, what will be the benefit, and what is the relation with global warming?
Dimming Sun Project – The controversial project to reduce sunlight and heat has now found investors. Some scientists call it an effective solution to global warming, while some believe that doing so can be a fatal step for the earth.
There is a controversy among scientists from all over the world regarding the technique of reducing sunlight through solar geoengineering. (Photo: Shutterstock)
Dim Sun: Scientists in some countries are working on a project to harness sunlight and heat. He claims that if the heat of the sun is reduced, then there will be a great success in the campaign against global warming on the earth. However, scientists opposing this project say that if this project is not stopped immediately, it can prove to be a suicidal step for the earth in the coming times. The great thing is that during this debate among scientists, the project has received huge investment.
After this project of dimming the sun has received huge investment, now the debate on this matter has also intensified. Scientists are calling this research to reduce sunlight Solar Geo-Engineering. Even after the warnings given by the scientists regarding all the dangers, the scientists working on this project are not taking the name of stopping. Let us inform you that India’s name is also there in many countries involved in this project.
How will the sunlight be reduced?
Scientists say that under this project, sulfur will be sprayed on the upper layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. Actually, the layer of sulfur will reflect the sun’s rays and send them back into space. Due to this, sunlight will not be able to reach the earth with its full heat. Due to this, the temperature on the earth will not increase excessively. Scientists working on the project believe that this will go a long way in preventing global warming. Now that they have got a big investment in this project, they will be able to move forward with the work on it.

Who is giving financial help?
Britain’s social organization Degrees Initiative has told that this project is being given the help of Rs 7.44 crore ($ 9 lakh). At present research work is going on in 15 days on the Solar Geo Engineering project. Apart from India, countries like Nigeria and Chile are also included in this. Please tell me that most of the developing countries are involved in this project. The social organization told that this financial assistance is being given for the study of the effect of solar engineering on the monsoon.
Why has the project received funds?
The Degrees Initiative said that along with the impact on the monsoon, this fund has also been given to prepare computer modeling to study the impact of storms and biodiversity due to solar geoengineering. In the year 2018 also, the Degrees Initiative had given the assistance of $ 9 lakh to scientists from 10 countries for this research. Then scientists studied the growing threats to the climate due to increased drought in South Africa and rice production in the Philippines.
Harvard and Oxford University have also studied solar engineering. According to a Reuters report, Andy Parker, founder, and CEO of the Degrees Initiative said that through this project, we want balance. Through this project, those countries are being empowered, which will be affected the most by global warming. They are being empowered to take decisions on the use of this technology. The entire fund has been done jointly by the Degrees Initiative and Open Philanthropy and the World Academy of Sciences.

Why is there opposition to the project?
Some scientists are also opposing this project to reduce sunlight. He says that if we raise the hope of dealing with climate change in this way, then the companies doing business with fossil fuels will sit on their hands in the matter of dealing with global warming. At the same time, the use of this technique can spoil the weather cycle. This will create the danger of increasing poverty in developing countries. According to Chukwumeriye Okereke, director of the Center for Climate Change and Development at Alex Akwem Federal University in Nigeria, the technology is highly controversial.
Okereke says that there are many techniques through which global warming can be reduced. But, solar geoengineering will be the deadliest step among them. Solar geoengineering has not been mentioned anywhere in the report presented by United Nations experts on climate change. At the same time, scientists supporting it are citing the global temperature which was under control for a year due to the ash scattered in the sky after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo volcano in the Philippines in 1991.
Why the rush to reduce global warming?
The average temperature of the last 8 years has been the hottest in history compared to the pre-industrial revolution. According to the data, the temperature has increased by 1.2 degree Celsius. At the same time, under the Paris Agreement 2015, it has been resolved not to allow the global temperature to rise more than 1.5 degrees. That’s why scientists from all over the world are in a hurry to adopt some way to curb the rising temperature. According to Frank Biermann, Professor of Global Sustainability Governance at Utrecht University, the average American emits 14.7 tons of carbon dioxide every year. At the same time, the average Indian is emitting only 1.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide. If the average carbon emission of people around the world becomes equal to that of Indians, then it will be easier to deal with the problem of climate change.
