New Delhi: Bangladesh High Court on Monday prohibited the promotion and screening of the film ‘Faraaz’ directed by Indian filmmaker Hansal Mehta on the country’s cinema hall and online platforms। ‘Faraaz’ has been built on the basis of a real-life terrorist attack that devastated Dhaka Cafe in 2016, including Juhi Babbar, Aamir Ali, Includes Jahan Kapoor and Aditya Rawal
Petition was filed against the film
After hearing a writ petition, the High Court bench of Justice MD Khasruzman and MD Iqbal Kabir ordered a ban on the screening of the film in Bangladesh। On 1 July 2016, a writ petition was filed by Abinta Kabir’s mother, Ruba Ahmed, who was killed by terrorists in an attack on the Holy Artisan Cafe। The Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting was made a defendant in the writ petition.
Not yet approved by the censor board
The film is yet to be approved by the Bangladesh Film Censor Board। On 19 January, Ruba Ahmed raised a demand to stop the film’s release in Bangladesh, claiming that it could tarnish Bangladesh’s reputation। According to the news of the Dhaka Tribune, Petitioner’s lawyer Ahsanul Karim later said the petition was filed to prevent the film from being screened in Bangladesh theatres as well as on online platforms.
These are the controversies about the film
According to the Dhaka Tribune, Karim said – footage of the film shows two terrorists talking, one of whom had or had an affair with Abinta। His attire was shown in such a way that educated families would never wear it in our civilized society। The girl’s character was let down in the film। Karim said, moreover, that the film featured the failure of law enforcement officers, which raises serious questions over our sovereignty। For these reasons, this film should not be shown on any stage in Bangladesh.
