The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), a student organization of IIT-Bombay, has demanded the resignation of director Subhasish Chaudhary following the death of 18-year-old Dalit student Darshan Solanki on Wednesday. Explain that the family of the student who committed suicide has claimed that he faced discrimination in the premier institution for belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community and there is a strong possibility that he was ‘murdered’.
The APPSC criticized Chowdhary for failing to make the institute a safe place for Dalit, Bahujan, and Adivasi students, despite being aware of it, The Hindu reported. The APPSC in a statement blamed the institute’s failure to act in time for Darshan’s suicide. Along with this, APPSC said, ‘We demand the resignation of the director of the institute in the light of these new facts.’ Let us tell you that 18-year-old Darshan Solanki died on Sunday after allegedly jumping from the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of IIT.
The students’ union said, ‘The most disturbing thing in this whole episode is that the administration, including the director, is constantly trying to deny any kind of caste discrimination in the campus.’ Apart from this, APPSC said that students and organizations who are trying to bring the issues of discrimination to light are being accused of harming the reputation of the institution.
