According to Pakistani media ARY News, the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association has written a letter to the Finance and Health Ministers and the CEO Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), demanding an increase in the prices of medicines. In the letter, the pharma industry gave an ultimatum to the government that if the government did not increase the prices ‘within a week’, it would shut down its factories across the country. Demanding an increase in drug prices to compensate for the rise in petroleum products and US dollar rates, the association said it has become impossible to manufacture and sell drugs at their current prices.
The pharma industry warned of a shortage of drugs if prices were not increased, saying factories were facing difficulties in manufacturing drugs due to the non-opening of letters of credit (LCs). Earlier in January, the pharma industry warned that the drug shortage crisis could worsen as pharmaceutical companies are running short of raw materials.
PPMA President Syed Farooq Bukhari alerted the government that pharmaceutical companies were facing a shortage of raw materials for the production of medicines. He said that if the letters of credit (LC) are not opened by the central bank within 15 days, then the country will see a huge shortage of medicines. The chairman said that at least 700 pharmaceutical companies had placed orders for the raw materials of medicines and the government should open LCs so that the companies could lift their goods.
