Islamabad: Pakistan has lifted the ban on Wikipedia. The country’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to lift the ban on Wikipedia. On February 1, Pakistan blocked Wikipedia for not removing anti-religious content. This action was taken by the Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA). PTA had given this information while sharing the press release on Twitter. The PTA had said that Wikipedia had been contacted to block/remove the profane content. Two days after failing to respond to the objections, Pakistan’s authorities banned Wikipedia. On February 6, the matter of the ban was put before Pakistan’s PM Shahbaz Sharif. He constituted a ministerial committee for a preliminary inquiry into the issue.
According to the Geo News report, the committee said, “Wikipedia is a useful site/portal, which works for the dissemination of knowledge and information to the general public, students, and teachers.” The statement further said, “Completely blocking the site for some objectionable content/profane content was not an appropriate measure. We will lose many benefits from this comprehensive ban.” Following the committee’s statement, Shehbaz Sharif on Monday directed that Wikipedia be restored with “immediate effect”. He also constituted a new cabinet committee to look into the matter closely.
The committee constituted by Sharif will include Pakistan’s Minister of Law and Justice, Minister of Economic Affairs and Political Affairs, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Minister of Commerce, Minister of Communications, and Minister of IT and Telecom. The purpose of the committee is to review the appropriateness of the PTA’s ban on Wikipedia while examining and suggesting alternative technical measures to remove objectionable content on Wikipedia or any other online information sites considering the “socio-cultural and religious sensitivities” of Pakistan. The committee will also share other recommendations aimed at controlling illegal online content in a balanced manner and has been ordered to submit them within a week.
