Washington. The US State Department has approved the potential sale of long-range missiles, rockets, and launchers to Poland in a deal worth up to $10 billion, the Pentagon said on Tuesday. News agency Reuters gave this information. In fact, since Russia’s attack on neighboring Ukraine, Poland is increasing its security capability and strengthening military cooperation with the US.
Potential sales include High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which Kyiv has praised for battlefield successes such as destroying Russian warehouses and command posts. The defense deal includes 18 HIMARS launchers, 45 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles of 185-mile (297 km) range, and over 1,559 Guided Multiple Rocket Launch System (GMLRS) rockets.
The United States has rejected Ukraine’s requests for ATACMS missiles and Poland will not be allowed to send any weapons to Ukraine without US approval. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency informed the US Congress on Tuesday about the possible sale.
The Pentagon said, ‘The proposed sale will improve Poland’s military goals of updating military strength while increasing interoperability with the United States and other allies.’ The deal comes after Poland was approved to buy 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks and 250 M1A2 tanks made by General Dynamics in 2022.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is about to complete one year and in such a situation, Poland and other NATO allies are worried about the possibility of Russia’s increasing aggression on Ukraine. The ministry said the sale would support US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the defensive capabilities of NATO ally Poland. Poland is important for political stability and economic progress in Europe.
In May 2022, Poland requested an additional 500 HIMARS launchers from the United States, but Lockheed Martin Corp said it could only provide about 200 launchers, according to Polish media. In October last year, Poland signed an agreement to buy 288 Chunmu rocket launchers from South Korea.
Despite the deal being approved by the State Department, the notification does not indicate whether a contract has been signed or whether negotiations have ended.
