Holi Special: Holi can also be beneficial for health and the environment, but…

Holi Special – As the festival of Holi approaches, environmental activists advise stopping the waste of water and not cutting green trees for Holika Dahan. Most environmental activists say that the environment is harmed in many ways on Holi. In such a situation, if we take a little care, then the festival of Holi can also prove to be beneficial for our health and that of the environment.

As much as the festival of Holi is related to our tradition and faith, equally, it is related to our health and that of the environment.

Holi Special: As soon as the festival of Holi approaches, the surrounding environment starts feeling drenched with colours. On the day of Holi, people celebrate by applying colour and gulal to each other. At the same time, people all over the country drench each other with coloured water. At the same time, people engaged in the campaign to save the environment start worrying about saving the green trees that are cut for the recent combustion and the water used to play Holi. On the contrary, people give the argument about having only one day’s Holi. Both are correct in their respective places. India has a tradition of celebrating every festival with great enthusiasm. In such a situation, if we take a little care, then this festival of colours can prove to be beneficial for both our health and the environment.

This time the festival of Holi is on 8 March 2023 i.e. Wednesday. At present, festival shopping is in full swing in the markets. Heaps of gulal, different colours and pichkaris are visible everywhere. Children’s Holi has already started. This festival communicates different energy in body and mind. Holi is celebrated in different ways across the country. People celebrate Holi according to their own traditions and customs. As much as this festival is related to our tradition and faith, equally it is related to our health. It is important that we celebrate Holi in the right way.

How is the festival of colours beneficial for health
Earlier in the country, Holi was played with the colours of flowers. With time Holi colours started being made in different ways. The colours were made using chemicals, due to which people also had problems related to skin and eyes. General Physician Dr Mohit Saxena says that if we play Holi with the colours of flowers, it has a great effect on our minds and body. According to him, if we play Holi with the colours of flowers, it will be beneficial for the skin as well. On the other hand, playing Holi with chemical colours causes irritation in our skin and eyes. At the same time, colours can cause a lot of harm to asthma patients. On the contrary, if they are not fragrance intolerant, then they will not have any problem with the colour of the flowers.

According to doctors, if we play Holi with the colours of flowers, then our skin gets ready for the summer heat.

The body prepares for the summer heat
Dr Saxena says that if we play Holi with the colours of flowers, then our skin gets ready for the summer heat. They say that the festival of Holi comes once a year. So, drench each other with water with full enthusiasm. But, to reduce the concern for the environment, excessive use of water should be avoided. At the same time, instead of cutting green trees for the latest combustion, people should use the waste wood lying in their homes. If this is not possible, then Holi should be prepared with a wooden stick after collecting donations. Keep in mind that green trees release life-giving oxygen for the earth and humans. Along with this, they also work to stop the hot winds.

How to play Holi to stay healthy?
Dr Naresh Kumar at Delhi’s LNJP Hospital says that due to the heat generated during Holika Dahan, bacteria present at some distance in the atmosphere are destroyed. He says that respiratory patients should avoid playing Holi with Gulal. He says that if someone has skin allergies and breathing problems, then it would be better not to play Holi. But, if you want to play, then instead of colours, you can play Holi only with water. With this, they will also be able to enjoy Holi and they will not have any problems. Dr Saxena says that the festival of Holi comes in such a season when it is neither too cold nor too hot. Almost the whole country has the same weather. This season also removes the laziness of winter. But, people who have problems related to cold, should play Holi with gulal instead of water.

Do not use garbage and plastic waste in Holika Dahan.

How will Holika Dahan be beneficial for the environment?
Researchers doing research on Havan, Havan material and its various aspects at Haridwar’s Yajnavalya Center told that if Holika Dahan is to benefit health and the environment, then we should take special care of some things. A researcher Dr Devashish Giri said, first of all, if garbage, plastic waste, and green trees are being used in the Holi being prepared around you, then it is wrong. If you use neem or mango or castor or other medicinal tree wood and cow dung cakes along with various medicinal materials used in Havan in Holi, then it will be beneficial for the environment. According to him, the burning of mango, neem and castor wood releases volatile oils, which mix in the air and benefit the environment.

How will burning Holi be beneficial for health?
The researchers told that since 1979 research work is going on in their research centre on various aspects of Havan. At the same time, in 2002, research started on the medicinal materials used in Havan. Now dozens of diseases including diabetes are treated by doing havan at home. He told that patients regularly perform Havan at their homes with the prescribed medicine. Due to this, medicinal smoke reaches the body through the respiratory system and gives benefits. He says that when we give any medicine to a patient, it takes both time and energy to digest it. On the other hand, through the smoke, the medicine reaches the body and benefits rapidly. In such a situation, if medicinal materials are burnt along with mango, neem or castor wood in Holi, then definitely many people will get benefited from it.
