MT1 satellite will be re-entry into Pacific Ocean
The Indian Space Agency will bring its discontinued satellite Megha-Tropics-1 ( MT1) to Earth in a controlled manner in conjunction with French space agency CNES on Tuesday। The Indian Space Research Organization ( ISRO) stated that the satellite would fall into a deserted location in the Pacific Ocean। According to ISRO, it is set to bring down an Earth orbiting satellite called Megha-Tropics-1 ( Megha-Tropiques-1 ) on 7 March.
Satellite life was only three years
Significantly, MT1 was launched on October 12, 2011 as a joint satellite venture of ISRO and the French Space Agency, CNES, for tropical weather and climate studies। Although the life of this satellite was originally three years, But still it continued to provide extremely important data for more than a decade regarding regional and global climate models until 2021.
MT1’s 100-year orbital lightime
The Orbital Lighttime of MT1, weighing approximately 1,000 kg, could last more than 100 years in a 20 degree incline operating class at an altitude of 867 km। It had about 125 kg of on-board fuel unusable at the end of its mission which could pose a risk for accidental break-up। Therefore it needs to be brought down very carefully.
Why MT1’s re-entry is very challenging
Arrow-thermal simulations, ISRO said, suggest that aerothermal heating of any large piece of satellites during re-entry is unlikely to be avoided। Deorbiting is performed at very low altitudes in controlled re-entry to ensure impact within the targeted safe zone। However MT1 was not designed to operate EOL ( End of Life ) through controlled re-entry, making these entire missions extremely challenging.
